A WELCOME BREAK FOR CAROL’S SMILE

<

Cancer charity Carol’s Smile has an extra reason to be happy this week, as leading motorway service area provider Welcome Break presented it with a massive cheque to help reach its fundraising target.

Welcome Break staff across the UK have raised a staggering £31,200 for Carol’s Smile, following six months of fundraising efforts. The money was raised via a variety of means, including sponsored bike rides at Hopwood Park, Woodall and Sedgemoor as well as car washes and raffles at various sites.

Welcome Break chose to support Carol’s Smile as part of its Get Caught Smiling staff incentive scheme last year. The scheme was designed to encourage staff to smile more at work, recognising the positive effect of smiling whilst at work for staff and customers alike.

Carol’s Smile was set up in 2002 by Graham Harbord, following the death of his wife Carol from Hodgkin’s disease in the February of that year. The charity was set up to support research programmes into Hodgkin’s and other lymphomas, as well as to provide extra equipment for NHS oncology units. As part of his fundraising efforts, Graham walked 5000 miles around the UK in 2002 - 2003 to raise money and awareness of the charity.

Welcome Break’s fundraising efforts take Carol’s Smile’s fundraising total to £210,000, even closer to its £250,000 target.

Karin Montgomery, promotions manager at Welcome Break, said: "Supporting Carol’s Smile was extremely important to us and we’re glad that we have raised such a substantial amount for the charity. Graham has devoted so much of his time in the last few years to Carol’s Smile, especially with the walk, so he deserves to put his feet up for a while and let other people do the fundraising for him!"

"Our Get Caught Smiling campaign was extremely successful and definitely encouraged more Welcome Break employees to smile during their day to day jobs. Carol’s Smile seemed appropriate for us to support because of this emphasis on smiling and being positive and happy and hopefully through the funds we’ve helped to raise, Carol’s Smile will bring a smile to the face of many more cancer patients and their families."

Quote from Graham" I am totally amazed by the amount of money Welcome Break have raised. It reflects an enormous effort by the staff . I am very thankful to them all for their enthusiasm and effort. Carol’s Smile is a charity run by volunteers so we have no running costs. I can guarantee that all of the money raised will be used to buy equipment to improve survival rates from Hodgkins disease and other forms of cancer"

Further Carol’s Smile fundraising events are due to be held this year.
