Welcome to Carol's Smile Website
Carol's Smile is a registered charity formed in 2002 in memory of Carol
Harbord who died in February that year at the age of 31. Carol died after a
long and courageous battle against Hodgkins disease , a form of cancer.
Her husband, Graham completed a 5000 mile walk around the entire coast of
mainland Britain. He left Carol's grave in Churchdown, Gloucestershire on
September 25th 2002 ( their third wedding anniversary) and headed towards
Land's End. Walking anti clockwise through wind , rain , snow and then a
glorious summer Graham arrived back in Churchdown on October 10th 2003 ,
380 days after leaving home.
Graham reports
" The walk was a fantastic adventure. I loved the challenge of it all, even the
hard and painful hours were important. They just seemed to make more determined!
I found the scenery and wildlife inspiring ,particularly in the far north of
Scotland.
Above all else the help and support I received from the people I met was
brilliant. Their kindness far exceeded my expectations and I'm delighted
to have made so many new friends. I know that Carol would be so pleased and
proud , and that's the most important thing to me"
The charity has been well supported by celebrities including Gary Lineker,
Jonathan Edwards, Alan Hansen, Phil Vickery, Lorraine Kelly and Peter Reid.
Most of all the charity has received superb support from people throughout
Britain.
The initial target was to raise £50 000. However due to a series of wonderful
events the figure has soared over £140 000!
"We are all delighted with the fundraising . The great enthusiasm generated
by hundreds of people will stick with us ,and inspire us to carry on the
wonderful start made by Carol's Smile"
The first equipment was purchased last summer, £39 000 was spent acquiring a
DNA sequencer . This is being used by Professor Lynch at UCH London to support
his research into improving bone marrow transplants. He is very happy with the
equipment , and we hope to support this ground breaking research in the future.
At present we are also discussing equipment required at the Bristol and
Cheltenham Oncology Centres and the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Shetland. Our
aim is to provide equipment which will improve the efficiency of cancer
treatment and make things more comfortable for patients.
The walk may be finished but Carol's Smile goes on !
There are several plans for 2004 with a team entered in the Paris Marathon
in April , quiz nights,a cycle marathon , a ten pin bowling night & a treasure
hunt to name a few.Futhermore it has to be said that Graham has already begun
to talk about another big trip!
