Carol’s Smile is a registered charity supported by Gary Lineker, Jonathan Edwards and
other celebrities.
The main motivation for setting up the charity was to focus our efforts on a particular
kind of cancer, the lymphomas. Although there are 60% more cases of lymphoma than
leukaemia it is relatively low profile with only a small number of research programmes.
Setting up Carol's Smile gives us the opportunity to focus on specific research and the
exact equipment requested by the hospital oncology units.
Setting up Carol’s Smile as a registered charity was more involved than had been
anticipated. There was much form filling and dealing with banks, a solicitor and the
Charity Commission . After a redraft of the Trust Deed the charity was finally registered
The charity aims to do two things:-
- To support research programmes into Hodgkin's disease and other lymphomas.
The highest priority will be given to research into an effective secondary treatment
for these illnesses where conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy have failed to
remove the disease.
We aim to locate appropriate research with the help of the
British National Lymphoma Institute. There are about 10 000 new cases of
lymphoma diagnosed each year in the UK. A large proportion of these are
young people in the 15 to 35 age category. It is a type of cancer which
affects the lymphatic system. This system is a key part of the body’s
natural defence against infection - the immune system.
- To buy equipment for NHS oncology units. The main emphasis is on items which
make life more comfortable for cancer patients and are not currently provided.
For example, electronically operated beds which allow patients to adjust their
position in bed easily.
- In particular we will be supporting the work of Professor Linch - who is leading the
field in Hodgkins treatment. Watch this space for further information!
Doing something positive and focussed is also the best tribute we could make to the way
Carol lived her life. We wanted to do fun things in honour of a fun loving person.
